Heritage Week is off to a flying start with audiences of more than 20,000 turning out for Cork Heritage Open Day in the City. The annual celebration of Cork’s built heritage provided free access to more than 40 buildings, usually closed to the general public, along with 100 events spread across the city.
“The Heritage Open Day in Cork was a huge success, with great numbers of families and individuals of all ages exploring Cork’s buildings and events. It shows the interest and appreciation for our heritage, and kicks off the Heritage Week in Cork and nationally,” said Niamh Twomey, Heritage Officer, Cork City Council.
The Masonic Hall on Tuckey Street, Cork City and County Archives, Shandon, The Elysian, Crawford Gallery and Carpenters Hall were among the buildings open to the public on Saturday, 22 August. Free events on the heritage day line up included the Medieval Family Day at Elizabeth Fort, Water Heritage Day at the Lifetime Lab as well as art and design activities at the Glucksman Gallery and at UCC.
Heritage Week, which is supported by the Heritage Council, runs from 22nd August until 30th August with an incredible line up of free events and activities throughout the country. More information is available at www.heritageweek.ie
