The death has been announced of RTÉ Broadcaster Derek Davis, at 67 years of age.
News of his death emerged on RTÉ’s Radio 1’s Sean O’Rourke show earlier.
Derek Davis was a man who loved Cork, and the Kinsale area in particular.
Back in 2011 I met Derek in Little Island, Cork where he was MC’ing the opening of a production facility for a local Artisan food company.
The Blue Haven Food Company evolved from the Blue Haven Hotel in Kinsale, and the company had just completed a 1 million euro investment in a commercial scale production facility in Little Island, creating 15 jobs.
The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Cork TD, Simon Coveney opened the unit, and Derek Davis was on hand also.
I spoke with Mr Davis who said the Blue Haven Food Company company demonstrated how “thinking outside the box” is so important for companies looking to grow.
Much of Derek’s work was before the internet, so there aren’t that many clips available of his work online, but here’s one gem from the 1980’s, check out the show-business jacket
