Sinn Féin members and supporters from throughout West Cork are invited
to the Clonakilty Hotel this Friday evening (20th) at 8pm where the
convention to select the candidate to contest the upcoming General
Election in Cork South West will be held.
The convention will be chaired by Cork City-based TD Jonathon O’
Brien, with guest speaker being Ireland South Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní
Riada.
Ceol afterwards with the popular “Highland Paddies”.
A spokesperson for Sinn Féin West Cork stated:-
“This will be an historic selection convention for Sinn Féin in West Cork.
While we’ve been successfully contesting local elections for the last 20 years
in the constituency, and have stood in all General Elections in the
same period, Sinn Féin hasn’t had a TD in West Cork since the 1920’s.
With our ever-growing popularity over the last few years nationally,
and opinion polls consistently seeing support rising, we feel that the
upcoming General Election could very well change all that and we will
see a Sinn Féin TD elected in Cork South West whenever the General
Election is held.
Last May, we made another historic breakthrough when Cllr. Rachel
McCarthy, (Bandon) and Cllr. Paul Hayes, (Clonakilty) were elected to
Cork County Council. Again it had been nearly 90 years since West Cork
last had SF County Councillors.
Prior to that we had town councillors in most of the West Cork towns.
We extend an open invitation to all members and supporters (and media)
to attend the convention at The Clonakilty Hotel, Wolfe Tone St.,
Clonakilty at 8.00pm this Friday evening 20th February, to witness the
democratic selection of the Sinn Féin candidate, who could very well
be a Sinn Féin TD for West Cork this time next year.”
