Cork City W.F.C. 0 – UCD Waves 6
(Cronin 16, O’Gorman 35, 50, 66, Berill 78, 79)
Cork City fell to a six nil defeat in Bishopstown against UCD Waves in the Continental Tires Women’s National League with star performer Aine O’Gorman grabbing a hat-trick for the Dublin side.
The Leesiders, plagued by injury problems coming into the game, started well and the first quarter of the game was very even. However, from their first real sight of goal – Waves took the lead. Cork City lost the ball on the edge of the box, and O’Gorman crossed to the middle of the goal for an inrushing Catherine Cronin to fire home to take the lead. The same player had a header tipped just wide by goalkeeper Trish Fennelly four minutes later, which prompted a response from the home side as first Ogbonnamiscontrolled with only the keeper to beat before Shannon Carson went on a lung-busting run but dragged her long range effort just wide. Cronin then had a close range effort blocked out for a corner by Fennelly before O’Gorman doubled the away side’s lead. The UCD striker was played through by Julie-Ann Russell and her shot trickled past the keeper.
It took only five minutes in the second half for UCD to increase their lead, with O’Gorman again finishing past an outrushing Fennelly with a low drive to the near post. Barely four minutes later, the visitors had a goal ruled offside after Cronin collected the throughball from O’Gorman but the linesman raised his flag – a major let-off for Cork City. However, UCD would not be denied for much longer as O’Gorman completed her hattrick with a low drive past Fennelly to put UCD into a commanding position. Cork were not completely out of the game however, as Ogbonna had a chance cleared off the line after a low drilled free-kick from Katie McCarthy.
Reekah Carroll then had an effort cleared off the line, with Fennelly managing to gather to prevent a further goal. It wasn’t long before the next goal did arrive however, as Jetta Berill got on the end of substitute Orlagh Nolan’s cross after O’Gorman fluffed her shot and finished into the corner of the net. The winger grabbed her second goal, and UCD’s sixth, barely a minute later after getting on the end of a long-clearance and hitting a low shot beyond Fennelly.
The Leesiders next scheduled game is for the 22nd February against Peamount away in Dublin and they will have to pick themselves up quickly for a stern test.
