The man who is credited as putting Clonakilty on the map through the founding and promotion of the now world-famous Clonakilty Black Pudding, has been honoured posthumously. At 11.30am today a street nameplate was officially unveiled in Clon.
Last January the then Town Council voted unanimously to rename Bridge Street in the town after the late Mr Edward “Eddie” Twomey who died a number of years ago.
The street runs from the AIB Bank Corner to Emmet Square and the nameplate is erected on the bridge at the Post Office end, just a few metres from the Michael Collins statue, and Spiller’s Lane which Mr Twomey and his wife Colette developed after the they purchased it.
While the nameplate was erected a number of weeks ago by the local County Council foreman (as the Town Council was abolished in May), the official unveiling ceremony organised by the Clonakilty Mayoral Council (elected in May after the demise off the official Town Council) took place this morning.
Coincidentally, Colette Twomey, Edward Twomey’s widow is the present Mayor of Clonakilty and she performed the unveiling.
The idea to rename the street was proposed by then Town Cllr Kevin O’Regan (FG) and supported unanimously by all nine members of the Town Council last January. A public consultation period and other legalities had to be initiated before the street could be renamed officially.
