The New and Improved Fitzgerald’s Park has opened
A full programme of free entertainment will take place over the weekend.
Public performance areas for theatrical and musical performances, the award winning Chelsea Garden, new planting, plazas and pathways as well as new play areas are amongst the many features which have been incorporated over the past several months.
On aturday and Sunday from noon to 6.00 p.m. the Park will host a whole series of free entertainments, from musical acts, circus performances, rappers, face painting, yoga classes, graffiti demonstrations (on clingfilm!) and much more.
The range of musical acts caters for every taste and includes jazz guitarists to classical quartets, traditional sessions to rappers and DJ Sets, while circus performances and workshops where visitors can learn circus skills are sure to be an attraction each day.
At the Lord Mayor’s Pavilion, Cork Printmakers will be on duty with a Pop-Up Gallery and printing demonstrations, offering the opportunity for visitors to make their own prints from 11 am to 4 pm each day.
Yoga classes for children, beginners and other levels will rarely have a better setting that the beautifully enhanced park and food stalls will ensure that nobody gets too hungry.
An Exhibition on the Great Exhibition on 1902 from which the current park derived many of its features, will run in the Museum.
Said Cork City Council Project Engineer Aoife Mahony:
“This weekend will showcase what the “new” Fitzgerald’s Park can be. It will be full of activity, music and fun and visitors will be able to see at first hand how we have integrated Mardyke Gardens with Fitzgerald’s Park, the old with the new. The changes really enhance the park experience and anyone who has had a sneak preview of the improvements has been bowled over by their positive impact. We would love families to come, to bring picnics and to stay for a few hours over the weekend. At the moment, the weather forecast is promising, so it should be a weekend to remember. “
