The surgeon who separated the conjoined Benhaffaff twins has been honoured
in Cork.
Doctor Edward Kiely is a Consultant Neo-natal and Paediatric Surgeon in
London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital and flew back yesterday to collect
the inaugural “Spirit of Cork” trophy.
The Benhaffaf twins – now aged 4 – and their Mother Angie were also at the
black tie event, along with 250 guests from the civic, political and
business sectors, including the County Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor, and a
number of Honorary Consuls.
Dr Kiely said his is a profesion in which there are good day and bad days,
he said the Benhaffaf twins were one of the highlights of his many years.
The Cork born Doctor, who graduated from UCC before leaving Ireland,
entertained the crowds in his acceptance speech, with many amusing anecdotes
