Fine Gael Cork South Central Deputy and Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, has welcomed the announcement by medical devices firm DePuy of the creation of 38 new jobs as part of an expansion of its facility in Ringaskiddy, Co Cork.
“I am delighted by the announcement of DePuy this week. This announcement is a great vote of confidence for our local workforce here in Cork and the facility has gone from strength to strength since it first opened in 1997. These jobs are being created as part of a $36 million investment by the company in its Irish production.
“As the centre for DePuy’s European operations, this investment will play a major role in increased research, marketing and new material development. It is of no surprise that announcements like this are happening in the same week when we hear that live register figures have dropped right across the county of Cork. Between November 2012 and November 2013 there has been a decrease of 8.8% in the amount of people signing on across the county.
“Addressing the unemployment problem has always been one of Fine Gael’s main priorities since entering Government. This steady decrease in unemployment shows that policy decisions are having an effect and I hope that this downward trajectory will continue into the future.
“This drop in local Live Register figures reflects the national picture, with the overall number of people now signing on at its lowest point in over four years. They come on foot of Ireland being named this week by the influential Forbes magazine as the best country in the world for business.
“It is positive announcements like this one by DePuy, which shows the world Ireland is recovering and open for business once again”.
