The fourth Open House Cork weekend takes place this weekend from October 4th to October 6th. Open House is a design festival which runs in 40 cities across the world, celebrating the best architecture each city has to offer. Open House Cork’s series of talks, tours and exhibitions held in buildings all over the city will showcase the rich and varying architecture of the city. All of the events are completely free, and mostly available on a first come, first served basis.
Over these 3 days, buildings that aren’t usually accessible to the public open their doors for one weekend only, with tours provided by expert guides. Each building and event is staffed with a number of helpful OHC guides who are happy to greet and assist you. Enjoy the free building tours, lectures, walking trails, exhibitions, and readings.
Highlights in this year’s programme include:
A lecture series with Tina Saaby. Tina was the Chief Architect of Copenhagen from 2010 to 2018. She was previously Vice President of the Danish Architects ́ Association and is a director and partner of Witraz Architects in Copenhagen. Tina is a member of the Think Tank ”The city 2025” by the Ministry of Housing, Urban and Rural Affairs of Denmark and is chairman of the Advisory Board of the employer panel at The Royal Academy of Art. Over two lectures taking place at the Cork Centre for Architectural Education and the Conference Space at Nano Nagle Place, Tina will speak about transforming Copenhagen and the potential of Cork.
VENICE: ALTER [i]CITY. Familiar Fields & Uncharted Territories – An exhibition by the masters students of the Cork Centre for Architectural Education (CCAE). Stunning drawings, models and films will describe new architectural proposals for the city of Venice, testing the concept of “peripheries” and its multiple meanings in architecture.
Open House Cork Architectural Pub Trail – Gareth O’Callaghan (Architect) and Tom Spalding (Author) will lead an architecturally themed pub walking tour on a route that will meander through Cork’s streets, drawing attention to some of the city’s most architecturally interesting imbibing establishments while making time for a tipple or two along the way – alas, drinks are not included so bring your pocket book! The Frank Murphy Trail – Conor English, author of the forthcoming book ‘Cork’s Modern Architect, the work of Frank Murphy’, will lead a series of events centred on the work of Cork’s renowned Architect. A dedicated modernist and an equally progressive conservation campaigner, Murphy concentrated for much of his career on the 20th century ecclesiastical designs, schools, offices and factories of Cork.
And some of the many buildings opening their doors include: Nano Nagle Place, Crawford Art Gallery, Cork Centre for Architectural Education, National Sculpture Factory, Arus Mhuire Sheltered Housing, Tory Top Library, CUBS – Former Cork Savings Bank, Crown Park Villa, and Fourem’s offices.
