Cork City will finish off their 2013 league campaign with a home fixture against newly-crowned champions St. Patrick’s Athletic at Turner’s Cross tonight.
City, who had been enjoying an excellent run of form in recent weeks, fell to their heaviest defeat of the season last week, as they were on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat to Dundalk, so they will be hoping to get back to winning ways against the champions.
Speaking ahead of the game, Technical Director Paul O’Brien told CorkCityFC.ie that the visitors were deserving title winners, but that City will be looking for a result to secure sixth place in the league table: “Over the last couple of weeks we have been on a great run of form. Unfortunately last week against Dundalk didn’t match our recent good form, but having said that, I think the players showed a lot of character and kept going for the ninety minutes. “
“When you look at St. Pats’ form over the course of the whole season, there’s no doubt that they deserved to win the league. They were the most consistent team, and towards the end of the season they held firm to seal the title.”
“When I came in a few weeks ago, we said we wanted to get as many points as possible by the end of the season. Hopefully we can get a result on Friday to stay in front of the team behind us, and I think we are capable of doing that.”
On the injury front there are doubts over the availability of John Dunleavy who picked up a knock to his ankle last week and Brian Lenihan (knee), while Garry Buckley will miss the tie through suspension.
