Workers’ Party Cork City Councillor Ted Tynan has called on Cork City Council to launch a public information in tandem with the major city boundary changes that come into force at the end of next month.
Cllr. Tynan said that with local elections just seven weeks away there was still a lot of confusion among voters regarding both the city boundary and the local electoral area boundaries.
He said: “The City Council should bear in mind that this is the biggest shake up in local government boundaries in Cork in over 50 years. Large chunks of former County Council are now going to be in the city yet beyond political activists and a few others, there is not a general awareness of the new boundaries”
Cllr. Tynan said that the issue was most acute on the northside of Cork City following the abolition of the old North Central ward and the redistribution of its 15,000 voters while thousands more are coming in from areas previously in the county. It was incumbent on the local authority to ensure that everyone was fully aware of how the boundary changes would affect them.
