Local election candidate Peter Horgan of the Labour Party has called for a pedestrian crossing and more traffic calming measures to be implemented on Boreenmanna Road in the interest of safety for residents and visitors to the area.
“This is a highly residential area with many families spanning a number of generation, including residents minding grandchildren,” said Mr Horgan.
“I have been discussing with residents the need to implement traffic safety and there is overwhelming support for the installation of a pedestrian crossing in order to reduce speeds along Boreenmanna Road. While there are speed sign powered by solar panels they are in effect having an opposite impact as certain drivers are using them are targets to break rather than slowing down their speeds.
“I have written to the roads directorate in City Hall to request this installation along with further traffic management studies to examine how best we can reduce speeds on this road. It is also a high-density area on match days and we must grapple with balancing the importance of having events in the area versus residential peace of mind. I believe a pedestrian crossing will have a significant and immediate impact on car speeds and make it safer for children, families and all people who live on or walk along Boreenmanna Road.”
