Local Fianna Fáil TD, Michael Moynihan has expressed concern that despite a Government initiative to tackle illegal dumping, rubbish is being left in public spaces and on roadsides in isolated rural parts of the region.
Deputy Moynihan said, “It seems to be the case that following the busy Christmas period households have more waste than usual and bins are filling up fast. Sadly, people are choosing to illegally dump the rubbish that can’t be collected by their waste operators by the roadside rather than properly recycling it. Just this afternoon, I have come across a number of spots of illegal dumping in the Newmarket area.
“I understand that there’s a financial cost to properly disposing of household refuse and that bin charges can be costly but it doesn’t compare to the environmental cost and the impact on the landscape in our area. It destroys what is an otherwise scenic and picturesque countryside.
“I have made contact with the County Council to seek their assistance with the cleanup of each of the black spots affected. That said, I am also urging locals to be conscious of their waste disposal practices. We each have a responsibility to help with eliminating flytipping and making people aware of its adverse effects.
“In the broader term, it’s definitely necessary to better enforce the existing waste laws and impose greater fines to deal with the problem,” he concluded.
