Officers from Revenue’s Customs Service, assisted by An Garda Síochána,
last night (10/10/13) seized a total of 60,000 cigarettes, €55,000 in cash
and 30kgs of tobacco in Co. Cork. The cigarettes and tobacco have a total
retail value of €38,560 and potential loss to the exchequer of €31,342.
60,000 unstamped cigarettes and a saloon car were seized from an Irish
national in the Watergrasshill are of County Cork. The ‘Capital’, ‘Elite
Gold’ and ‘Walton’ brand cigarettes have a retail value of approximately
€28,000 with a potential loss to the exchequer of €23,000.
In a follow up search at a private residence in the East Cork area, one of
Revenue’s tobacco and cash dogs, Harvey, uncovered a further 30 kgs of
‘Amber Leaf’ and ‘Samson’ roll your own tobacco along with €55,000 in cash
which was detained under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2005. The tobacco has a
retail value of €10,560 with a potential loss of to the exchequer of €8,342.
Investigations are ongoing.
