The battle for sixth place continues in Drogheda tomorrow night, as
Cork City travel to face Drogheda United.
The home side go into the game ahead of City in sixth place on goal
difference, with previous meetings between the sides this season
resulting in a win for each and a 1-1 draw at the same venue earlier
this season.
Speaking ahead of the game, First Team Coach Billy Woods told
CorkCityFC.ie that it is a big game for City: “It’s a critical game
for us. We’ve six games to go and we want to push on for the rest of
the season now, starting tomorrow. It will be a difficult game. They
come into it on the back of losing the EA Sports Cup final on
Saturday, so they will be disappointed and will be looking to bounce
back. It’s been a long time since our last game, but similarly, we
want to get the defeat to Shamrock Rovers out of our system.”
“It has been a tight game any time we have played Drogheda over the
last two years. We were unlucky the last time we played up there in
the league, conceding a fairly harsh penalty in the last minute. I saw
the EA Sports Cup final at the weekend and I think they were unlucky.
Mick Cooke has done a fantastic job up there and they have a very
strong team. Like us, they will want to finish as high up the table as
they can, and it looks like it is between ourselves, Drogheda and
Limerick for that sixth place finish, so hopefully we can do it.”
Ciarán Kilduff returns having missed the tie with Shamrock Rovers due
to the terms of his loan move, however Colin Healy and John Dunleavy
both miss out through suspension. Long-term absentees Kevin Murray
(groin) and Darren Dennehy (foot) remain sidelined through injury,
however Dennehy has returned to light training in recent days.
