A Fine Gael Councillor in Cork says children with Down Syndrome should
have an automatic right to a medical card.
At present there are only three categories of people who automatically
receive cards without a means test:
those affected by Thalidomide, survivors of Symphysiotomy,
and people who contracted Hepatitis C or HIV from particular blood transfusions.
Fine Gael Cllr John Buttimer raised the issue of down syndrome medical cards
at todays meeting of the HSE South Regional Health Forum
Cllr Buttimer says people with the condition shouldn’t have to pass a
means test, or try and convince officials they are worthy of a
“discretionary card”, he says it should be a right
