Fianna Fáil TD, Michael Moynihan is delighted that approval has been given to Cork County Council to carry out remedial works, including a new roundabout, in Ballymaquirke (south of Kanurk, or West of Mallow) at the junction of the R579 and N72 by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
Deputy Moynihan was commenting after raising the issue with the Minister for Transport and TII over the summer.
“A recent analysis of the national roads network has identified this junction as being in need of safety works following an investigation and feasibility study.
“Following the submission of the feasibility study, Transport Infrastructure Ireland has confirmed to Cork County Council that funding will be made available to it to carry out the works.
“I am led to believe that the proposed solution will be the installation of a new roundabout at the junction.
“I have been informed that the County Council have been requested to obtain the services of a consultant to prepare detailed designs. It’s expected that planning will be applied for shortly with construction works to follow sometime in 2019.
“This is wonderful news for motorists coming travelling from Kanturk to Banteer, or along the N72 from Mallow to Millstreet. The significant safety issues at this junction have been a matter of concern to the local community and motorists for many years, and this development is great news for the many people travelling through this junction on a daily basis.
“I will keep the pressure on to ensure that these vital safety improvements take place as quickly as possible to ensure the maximum impact,” concluded Moynihan.
