The attempt by record-breaking swimmer Steve Redmond to swim from Ireland to Wales ended early yesterday morning (Thursday)
on the advice of his support team.
The West Cork man was raising funds for the RNLI by crossing from Wexford to Wales.
As is normal in crossings a support boat was following the swimmer, and around 4 o’clock yesterday morning the team decided to cancel the swim over fears of hypothermia.
Dr Jason van der velde from West Cork Rapid Response was part of the land team.
He was monitoring progress from Medico Cork.
That is Ireland’s National Maritime Telemedical Assistance Service provided by the Emergency Department at Cork University Hospital.
Dr Jason van der Velde says, even in a record attempt, health has to be the top priority
