One of Ireland’s oldest cinemas, the Regal Cinema in Youghal is set to reopen its doors this weekend following a year-long renovation. The cinema opened in 1936, having replaced Hurst’s Picture Palace which was destroyed by fire the previous year. The cinema last closed its doors in 2010.
The refurbished cinema consists of 2 cinema screens, a luxury new mezzanine level in screen one, a multi-purpose space for private parties, launches and corporate events and a wine bar & café. Many of the cinemas original architectural features have been meticulously restored and some eye-catching, art deco style touches added throughout. Combined with the latest state of art digital cinema technology, plush new seating and a luxurious feel and the addition of essential modern facilities, the new owners are content they have achieved what they set out.
“Our main priority for the Regal Cinema was to restore it to the finest detail to protect its vast heritage and history, while adapting it to suit contemporary tastes and habits”, said David O’Rourke, Director of Redbarn Construction. “It has been a hectic year but the positive reaction and memories the locals have shared with us have been amazing and certainly helped keep us focused on getting the doors open for the summer. The Regal is very much a part of this community here in Youghal and we look forward to welcoming audiences from near and far”.
The latest blockbuster movies, classic and art-house films will be shown and guests are encouraged to keep an eye on the cinema’s website www.regalcinema.ie and Facebook and Instagram for screening times, regular updates and announcements of special events. The multipurpose room is available for use for parties, corporate events, launches, and theatrical and musical performances. Each screen is also available for private screenings.
