The passage into law of the Technological Universities Bill will bring a new dynamic to educational life of Cork, the leader of Seanad Éireann has said.
Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer said: “This Bill will see a new chapter for the third level sector in Cork.
“This is a transformative piece of legislation and I am delighted that we have gotten it over the line.
“The Technological Universities Bill is a high priority for Government and will radically change the higher education landscape.
“I was happy as Leader of Seanad Éireann to facilitate the passing of this Bill through the Seanad.
“The legislation when enacted will underpin the development of a new type of higher education institution, building on the strengths and mission of institutes of technology to develop world class technological universities.”
Senator Buttimer said: “The new Munster Technical University, which is a coming together of Cork Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology, Tralee, will create the capacity for greater engagement with local enterprises, particularly Small and Medium Enterprises and will support innovation, management upskilling and internationalisation of companies.
“TUs will be able to undertake globally significant research and innovation that supports competitiveness and nurtures new business ideas; creating a regional research capacity.
“This Bill will have a transformative effect on Cork’s educational landscape. Enhanced higher education institutions will deliver the skilled and talented people that sustain enterprise and new investments.
“Ultimately it will make Cork more attractive to live in, raise a family in and work in.
“I am delighted to have worked with my Fine Gael colleague, Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor, to get this Bill over the line and I’m looking forward to seeing it signed into law soon.”
