Grants for additional home security must be made available to those living alone in rural Ireland – says West Cork TD
Cork South-West TD Michael Collins, wants more action from government to prevent the deviating effect of crime in rural Ireland.

‘I know too well the fear and worry of rural crime in our communities and especially for isolated people living alone who may be elderly and vulnerable,’ Deputy Collins said. The prolonged closures of rural garda stations around the country are without doubt the biggest contributor to the fear that exists around this issue.’
‘To tackle rural crime, more resources must be allocated to groups like Muintir na Tire so they can further allocate funding to Community Alert groups around the country – a scheme needs to be put in place where the homes of our elderly can apply for a grant for censor lights and CCTV to protect the properties.’
‘Immediate funding needs to be put in place to erect more CCTV in all of our rural towns and villages, Deputy Collins said. We are lucky to have a strong number of community alert groups in West Cork, who work close with the gardaí to prevent crime. ‘It is vital that action is carried out to allow community groups to put in place prevention measures and stop rural crime altogether around West Cork and around the country.’
