The Migraine Association of Ireland announces specialist migraine seminar for Cork Health Professionals.
Migraine is a complex neurological condition that has a debilitating effect on the lives of the estimated 500,000 Irish people who suffer from the condition. Worldwide, migraine is the third cause of disability in the under 50’s.
Many chronic migraine sufferers often turn to over the counter medications to deal with their daily pain and unfortunately that exacerbates the condition and can give rise to Medication Overuse Headache. These headaches are characterised by a near constant low-intensity pain and it only presents in people who have migraine.
Many patients currently presenting at specialist migraine clinics are actually suffering from Medication Overuse Headache and this condition can be avoided by correct and timely treatment and intervention for migraine in the primary care setting. With time and budgetary pressures on local GP’s and Health Professionals, this FREE information seminar will better equip HCP’s with additional skills to correctly diagnose and treat migraine.
The seminar is presented by Dr. Martin Ruttledge, Consultant Neurologist, The Hermitage Clinic, Dublin who is one of Ireland’s leading headache and migraine specialists with national and international knowledge and experience. Dr. Ruttledge will advise on differentiation and treatment options for different types of migraine (menstrual migraine, migraine in children, exercise related migraine) and he will also give an overview of the treatment options available for chronic patients when referred to the national migraine clinics. The seminar will also introduce new and emerging treatments for migraine and will explain how to recognise medication overuse headache.
Also presenting is Esther Tomkins, Clinical Nurse Specialist from the Headache Clinic, Beaumont Hospital. Esther is one of Ireland’s most experienced and qualified headache nurses and she is one of only 2 nurses qualified to treat patients with Botox for migraine.
The seminar takes place in Boole Theatre Complex, Room 6, University College Cork, Tuesday, December 12th, 6:30 – 9:00 pm. It is FREE to attend but attendees much register on Eventbrite.ie or alternatively email info@migraine.ie or call 01 8941280 to reserve a place.
