Cork South West Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Health, Jim Daly, has today (Thursday) confirmed over €1 Million euro for the construction of six new homes for the elderly off Townshend Street in Skibbereen.
Speaking on today’s announcement the Minister said, ‘I am delighted to confirm that my Ministerial colleague Eoghan Murphy has today approved a funding application from Cork County Council to construct six new homes. These homes will be designed and built to accommodate elderly people who are on the housing list in the Skibbereen area.’
Minister Daly, who has special responsibility for Older People, went on further to say that ‘the six new homes will be large one bedroom units, which is a design of home that is very short in supply for single people waiting to be housed.’
‘I want to thank Cork County Council for their proactive approach to providing these units in Skibbereen town. Independent living for older people, adjacent to services, is something that I am very much prioritizing since becoming Minister and I very much welcome this new development.’
Minister Daly concluded by confirming that, ‘Cork County Council hope to apply for a part 8 planning permission in January 2018 with a view to commencing construction on quarter three of 2018.’
