When is Culture Night? 22nd September
This year’s Cork County Culture Night Ambassador is writer and diarist, Alice Carey. Alice divides her life between Manhattan, where she was born and bred, and West Cork, where she and her husband, Geoffrey Knox, bought and renovated a house some years ago. Alice feels honoured to have been asked to be Cork County Culture Night Ambassador: “Being a blow-in from cultural Manhattan, I love exploring cultural County Cork. There’s something for everyone. For theatre lovers, see what the Glanworth Players are up to. If your passion is history, visit Cobh’s Sirius Arts Centre in the beautifully restored former Royal Cork Yacht Club next to The Heritage Centre, and learn about the Famine and The Titanic. In my own neck of the woods, Skibbereen’s West Cork Art Centre in a haven for contemporary visual art with classes for children and adults alike. Out on Beara, there’s Hungary Hill Writing. Culture abounds all around the county, even there in your own village or town. Take advantage of it.”
The annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts, takes place on Friday, 22nd September. An opportunity to explore your local area as arts, cultural organisations, and venues of all shapes and sizes around Cork County, will extend their opening hours until late, to allow people to explore special events, art, music and performances. Exciting events, tours, talks and workshops are specifically programmed at participating locations, and everything is available free of charge.
From Youghal to Mitchelstown to Mizen Head, expect local culture, global culture, fabulous food and entertainment such as events in the new Culture Dome in Clonakilty, live music from the likes of Steve Poltz in Ballydehob, history talks on Whiddy Island, global stories in Carrigaline, surrealist art in Killeagh, film screenings in Mitchelstown, photography exhibtions, storytelling, workshops and trad and brass bands… All this, and so much more.
