Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada is reminding Irish holiday makers that if they find themselves in need of help in a country that doesn’t have an Irish embassy they can use the embassy of any EU country.
“Ireland has just 61 embassies across the globe so Irish travellers could easily find themselves in a non-EU country and in need of assistance,” she said.
“If, for example, you become ill or injured, are a victim of a crime, find yourself arrested or require emergency travel documents to return home, embassies and consulates can provide crucial help.
“So it is important to remember that in countries without an Irish embassy Irish passport holders have the right to seek Consular Protection from the embassy or consulate of any other EU country.
“If you search for Consular Protection on the EU website you can get a full list of the countries where there is an EU embassy you are entitled to use.
“I would also remind travellers once more of the importance of applying for an EHI Card which entitles the holder to the same access to healthcare as locals when travelling to or in another EU or EEA country.
“Happy and safe travels to all those heading abroad this summer but if something does happen please be aware of your rights.”
