Cork North West TD, Michael Moynihan has said that the upcoming Development Plan must include full funding for the M20 Cork to Limerick motorway otherwise local communities in North Cork will feel that they have been ignored again by the Government.
Deputy Moynihan was commenting in advance of the expected Government announcement of a 10 years capital investment programme later this week.
“There have been many kites flown in the past few days from the Government. Time and time again, we hear positive sounds from the Government about the M20 project.
“However, unless the money is made available to start construction and the full funding is made available to complete the project, communities in North Cork will not believe the Government’s commitment to the motorway project.
“This project is absolutely required to stimulate the rural North Cork economy. However, fig leafs from the Government over the past four years have sucked any optimism out of the project for locals.
“They just don’t believe that it will ever be delivered, and unless the Government shows the people of North Cork the money in revised development plan this year, I fear that the project will never get off the ground.
“The Taoiseach has a chance this week to show to the people of Munster that his government’s priorities don’t stop at the M50 in Dublin. He must take the opportunity available to him now to deliver this crucial piece of infrastructure and connect two of Ireland’s most economically vibrant cities,” concluded Moynihan.
