Representatives from the HSE’s National Ambulance Service and senior HSE management met with GPs, public representatives and community groups in West Cork today (Tuesday, 12th February 2013) to update them on plans to modernise the National Ambulance Service operations in the region. In all discussions relating to West Cork, the HSE and National Ambulance Service management were cognisant of finding a service model to best suit the area’s remote geographical location. This briefing followed recent discussions between National Ambulance Service staff, management and SIPTU union representatives on a model of service for West Cork. The model of service proposed follows an analysis of the needs of the West Cork area and the best use of available resources including, paramedics and advanced paramedics. The plan follows a consultation process that has taken place with a wide range of interested groups such as GPs, local public representatives and community groups. The agreed model is extremely detailed, providing numerous benefits ultimately agreed by HSE management, union representatives and staff, which go far beyond the deployment of four emergency ambulances.
