Caitriona Twomey of Cork Penny Dinners is January Cork Person of Month Cork Penny Dinners has been serving meals to people in need in Cork since the 1840’s, and volunteer Caitriona Twomey, one of the leading organisers, received a Person of the Month award to mark her own unique contribution and as a representative of the whole organisation. “Penny Dinners cook and serve approximately 850 meals per week, originally for one penny, and now the rough equivalent, and they are open seven days a week all year round, including Christmas Day. They are Cork’s oldest, independent caring organisation, and one that we can be truly proud of, especially of all those who volunteer or donate food”, said Brian Crowley MEP who presented Caitriona with her award. Penny Dinners has ties right back to the soup kitchens, at the time of the famine in the 1840’s. They are based at 4 Little Hanover St., but are currently fundraising to purchase a new premises or to rebuild so that they can further enhance the services they provide.
