Cork County Council will NOT hold a reception for the new Bishop of Cloyne. Canon William Crean, whose last post was in Cahersiveen, was confirmed in November as Rome’s choice to replace Bishop John Magee, who resigned in 2009 Bishop-elect Crean will be formally installed Cobh Cathedral in two weeks time, on Sunday the 27th of January. Fianna Fail Cllr Kevin O’Keeffe asked Cork County Council to hold a reception for the new Bishop, but County Mayor Barbara Murray declined and said the custom has been to instead to pay a courtesy call to New Bishops. Cllr Kevin O’Keeffe says he was disappointed by the decision, but accepted that that has been the custom. The Diocese of Cloyne has a Catholic population of over 150,000 people, and includes 46 parishes and 107 churches.
