The National Lottery today congratulated the Irish rowing team on its spectacular success at the European Rowing Championships in the Czech Republic at the weekend.
National Lottery funding helped build the National Rowing Centre in Skibbereen, and to purchase boats and equipment. The investment has contributed to the success of the Irish rowing team with rowers Paul and Gary O’Donovan making history last August when they bagged an Olympic silver medal in the lightweight men’s double sculls race.

In total Irish rowers took home one gold and two silver medals from the European Championships over the weekend.
National Lottery CEO, Dermot Griffin, said today: “Congratulations to our Irish rowing team who are making their mark on the world sporting stage. We are really proud to say that money from the National Lottery Good Causes fund has helped the rowers along their journey, contributing to building the National Rowing Centre in West Cork. Since the Lottery was started in 1987 more than €4.9 billion has gone to Good Causes all over Ireland in the areas of sport, health, education, heritage and arts. “
