Cork City FC travel west to face Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park tonight.
City go into the game on the back of twelve league wins in a row, having recorded successive home wins against Bray Wanderers (2-1) and Finn Harps (5-0). Their last away fixture saw them record a 3-0 win against St. Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park. The home side come into the game on the back of a five-match unbeaten run in the league, and have recorded a win over Dundalk (2-1) and a draw with Derry City (0-0) in their last two home games.
The last meeting of the teams took place at Turner’s Cross in March, when goals from Maguire, Delaney, Dooley and Ellis saw City run out 4-0 winners. City’s last visit to Galway saw them record a 5-0 win last October.
Speaking to the media ahead of the game, John Caulfield said: “Galway had a slow start to the year and lost a couple of games, but they are on an unbeaten run of several games at the moment. Obviously, they have beaten Dundalk and drawn with Derry in their last two at home, so they are on a decent run and they have some seriously good players. They have goals in their team and they always create a lot of chances, so we are well aware of what is in front of us.”
“From our point of view, we are going there to get the three points. You just have to be on your game if you want to get the result. Galway is like Cork, a lovely ground and a passionate crowd. I keep saying that, if we play to our maximum, then I think we will win most of our games, but if we drop our performance you risk dropping points and that is what we have to guard against.”
“The fact that they haven’t lost in a while will breed confidence, so we know it will be difficult, but at the same time our form is good and we need to keep playing as we have been. It’s a special team and the fans are coming out to support them. It’s great for the lads and long may it continue.”
On the injury front, there are doubts over the availability of Steven Beattie, Alan Bennett and Karl Sheppard, all of whom will be assessed ahead of the game.
