Cork based Fine Gael Senator, Tim Lombard, said 50 Cork schools, of which 14 are local Cork South West schools, will undergo major improvement works over the summer months thanks to Government funding. It is understood that Senator Lombard will run in the next General Election in that constituency of Cork South West, because his other nearby constituency of Cork South Central already contains potential party leader Simon Coveney.

Speaking about the funding he said “This year around €500 million will be invested in school building infrastructure under the school building and modernisation programme. The Summer Works Scheme is designed to allow schools to carry out small and medium scale building works that will improve and upgrade existing school buildings. Some 438 schools around the country will receive a total €47 million for vital school improvements through this scheme.
“The Summer Works Scheme will see mechanical, sanitation, and roofing upgrades to buildings in both primary schools and secondary schools here in Cork and wider Ireland. The local Cork South West schools that will benefit from the scheme are:

• Dunmanway Convent N S, Dunmanway
• St Matthias N S, Church Road
• S N Cnoc Sceach, Knockskeagh
• S N Baile Muine, Ballineen

• Lisavaird Mixed N S, Clonakilty
• Mhichil Naofa, Ballinakilla
• St Mary’s Central School, Enniskeane
• Scoil Muire Na nGrast, Beal Guala
• Maulatrahane Central NS, Leap
• St. Brogan’s College, Kilbrogan
• Schull Community College, Colla Road
“Works will be carried out in Cork schools over the summer months, so the disruption to students, teachers and other school staff will be kept to a minimum.
“I am confident that school authorities here in Cork will be able to achieve best value for money on prices for jobs, and I call on all schools to ensure that they maximise the benefits of the works sanctioned by my Fine Gael colleague, Education Minister Richard Bruton.
“The Action Plan for Education, which aims to make the Irish education and training service the best in Europe within a decade, puts a big priority on investment in school educational infrastructure.
