Cork City take a break from league action tonight, as they face Limerick in the EA Sports Cup.
City go into the game on the back of a club-record nine consecutive league wins, having defeated Bohemians by two goals to nil at Dalymount Park on Friday night. Limerick also recorded a league win this weekend, with a 3-0 home win over Drogheda United on Saturday. The sides have already met once this season, with City inflicting a 3-0 home defeat on Limerick, thanks to goals from Maguire, Buckley and Morrissey.
Speaking ahead of the game, City boss John Caulfield said: “It’s a great game for us; our league form has been very good. We have a lot of players coming back in and we will make a number of changes. You can see the bodies are tired after getting back late on Friday and we have another massive match on Friday next, so we will need to make some changes but, at the same time, we want to progress in the cup.”
“We saw Limerick last night against Drogheda and they were very impressive. Limerick are a very good side and we expect them to be at full strength, but we will have a strong side out and we are going there to get a win.”
“We have players coming back in from injury who will want to stamp their mark on the game because they want to get back into the team. It is about us performing and those players coming in giving a top performance, because they need to do that to get back in the team.”
“I expect we will make six or seven changes. We have a lot of fellas in contention; the likes of Alan Smith, Shane Griffin, Greg Bolger, Steven Beattie and Christian Nanetti are all in contention to play, along with a few of our Under 19 players, like Conor McCarthy, Aaron Drinan and Alec Byrne.”
On the down side for City, Jimmy Keohane is ruled out after he suffered a shoulder injury against Bohemians on Friday night, the extent of which is still being assessed.
