The official Cork launch meeting of the newly-named Solidarity will take place tonight in the Metropole Hotel (8pm) and will be addressed by one of the Dail deputies at the centre of the water charges controversy Paul Murphy TD.
More than a dozen public meetings will be held across the state in April to launch the ‘Solidarity Party’ (formerly Anti Austerity Alliance) but tonights meeting in Cork is the first in the series.
Deputy Murphy’s trial for false imprisonment in the Joan Burton car protest of 2014 in Jobstown, Tallaght, is due to commence in exactly two weeks time (April 24).
Tonight’s meeting will also be addressed by a striking bus worker, by a campaigner for the repeal of the 8th amendment, by a climate scientist and by Deputy Mick Barry.
Deputy Barry said this morning: “I am proud that the first official launch meeting of Solidarity anywhere in the country is taking place in Cork tonight. Solidarity wants to unite all the struggles for change that are taking place and to build a strong Left alternative. I think we will see strong support for this project across the country and I’m hopeful that the series of launch meetings will get off to a good start here in Cork tonight.”
