On Sunday afternoon, 10 October, a yacht ran into difficulties near the Pollock Rock east of Power Head. The 10 metre yacht with one person aboard left Wales a few days earlier on passage to Las Palmas. The lone sailor experienced poor weather conditions and lost the use of his radio. He was heading for Cork Harbour when he ran into steering problems. He hailed a passing fishing boat to request assistance and they contacted the Coastguard for him. Ballycotton lifeboat was contacted and requested to lend assistance.
The RNLI lifeboat, Austin Lidbury, reached the yacht at 16:35 and established a towline. The yacht was taken under tow to Crosshaven, Cork Harbour, where it was safely moored by 18:00.
