Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) will begin the process of searching for a new President.
The news comes just weeks after nearby University College Cork (UCC) confirmed the name of their new president.
It is common for Presidents to change every 5-10 years in Irish institutes.
Cork Institute of Technology Dr Brendan Murphy wished to retire on 31st August, 2016. He has told the Board that he could remin in the beyond that date to facilitate the recruitment/appointment of a new President.
In accordance with provisions of the Institutes of Technology Acts the CIT Governing Body offiailly proposed this to Department of Education & Skills.
The Department confirmed that Dr Murphy may remain in post until 31st August, 2017 if required.
In a statement from CIT The Governing Body said they “would like to thank Dr Murphy for facilitating this approach”.
The process to appoint a new President will commence in the new academic year (i.e. October 2016 onwards)
