· UCC MEngSc graduate Xiufeng Yue landed the €1500 EirGrid award for his Master’s thesis
· The UCC PhD candidate has continued his studies in the energy sector, focusing on energy system trajectories in Ireland towards 2050
University College Cork (UCC) Master’s graduate Xiufeng Yue was today presented with an EirGrid award for high achievement in engineering. The Cork student won the award for his Master’s paper, entitled ‘Incorporation of Risk into the Exceedance Techno- Economic Model’.
Yue graduated from UCC with an MEngSc in Sustainable energy in 2015. His paper presents the work he conducted in the Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre (HMRC) in UCC. The paper focuses on ‘reviewing current systems of calculating energy output’ and ‘financial returns into the future’.

Yue was given a tour of EirGrid’s National Control Centre, from where Ireland’s electricity grid is controlled, before being presented with his award by EirGrid Innovation Manager Jon O’Sullivan.
Accompanying the recipient on the day was Dr. Brian Ó Gallachóir, Director of MEngSc in Sustainable Energy at UCC School of Engineering.
Mr O Sullivan said that “a paper of this calibre on sustainable energy is a testament to the great work being done by everyone in UCC School of Engineering, especially Dr. Brian Ó Gallachóir.
“Despite the high level of competition from his peers, Xiufeng’s thesis deservedly came out on top. This demonstrates how exciting the future will be for Xiufeng and everyone involved in the area of sustainable energy”.
