Cork Walks On Line was launched by Árd Mheara, Cllr Chris O Leary earlier today.
This is a digital version of Cork Walks which is a series of four free Heritage related walking trails in the city centre, all of which start from Daunts Square.
Funded by Cork City Council in conjunction with the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport these walking trails link places and buildings of heritage interest throughout the city from the steps and steeples of Shandon, archaeology and arts of the South Parish, the medieval to modern of the City Centre and the academic environs of University College Cork. This information was written by local historians including Peter Foynes, John Borgonovo , Ronnie Herlihy and Antóin O Callaghan.
“Cork Walks On Line” can be accessed directly from the homepage of the Cork City Council website. A map of the route for each walking trail is shown. By clicking on the information points on each of the walking trails you can read a short description of the places and events in these locations, as appears on the interpretive panels along the routes. The information points also feature past and present photographs so that the user can get a real feel or sense of the ‘story’ being unfolded through the Cork Walks.

For those who enjoy the “Cork Walks On Line” project the actual walking trail can be experienced by collecting Cork Walks brochures from the Tourist Office or Cork City Council Transportation Dept or downloading them from http://www.corkcity.ie/services/roadstransportation/corkwalks/
There are three elements to the walks which include colour coded directional signs throughout the walks to help orient and guide you, information panels located at various interest points along the route and brochures which describes the walk and the sights along the way as well as a detailed map.
As well as being very informative and interesting to local people, the walks provide a very attractive and enjoyable experience to tourists and visitors to Cork City.
