Irene Kelleher’s critically acclaimed A Safe Passage opens at Cork Arts Theatre on this evening at 8pm and will continue for five performances only, until Saturday. Irene has spent almost two years working on a new version of this, her fifth play.
Director Geoff Gould says “sometimes in life you get a chance to do something even better than the first time you did it. We are delighted as a team to have another opportunity to present A Safe Passage to Cork audiences. After almost thirty years working in theatre I think Irene is one of the most exciting and powerful voices writing and performing in theatre. Don’t miss her first two-hander. It is magical, funny, bewildering, beguiling, compelling, and always intriguing, and if you hate it, it is mercifully short, less than an hour.”
New Year’s Eve 1979. Two strangers are thrown together at Inish Dúbh Lighthouse: Christy the Keeper, shining a ceaseless vigil for all at sea, and the young woman who does not want to be saved. Both have plans for the evening. Both seem to want the same thing. But as the storm rages and the tower door shuts, they must decide – to weather the storm together or take a leap of faith? .
