Eight designs will be chosen to be sent around the world with a message from home
The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Mary Linehan Foley, is inviting 4th class primary school children from across the county to design special postcards and show what A Real Cork Christmas means to them. Eight winning designs, one from each Municipal District, will be chosen, printed and made available for people to send to family and friends, both at home and abroad.
The initiative is part of Cork County Council’s A Real Cork Christmas and encourages everyone in the county to celebrate the Christmas spirit during a year that has been like no other. The students, who will have their designs chosen by the County Mayor and some special helpers, will win the opportunity for their class to have a special Zoom call with Santa from the North Pole, as he prepares for his annual trip to deliver presents to boys and girls across County Cork. The students will also receive book vouchers for themselves and their class.
Mayor Linehan Foley said, “As a county, everyone is really pulling together to make this A Real Cork Christmas. In our primary schools, we have amazingly talented artists who have a chance now to share their designs with their community. Every effort will be made to add a little sparkle to Christmas, despite the wider challenges we face at the moment. We will learn from the most important people at Christmas time just what the season means to them and their families. I want to thank all the children in advance for their wonderful designs, and I look forward to seeing the winning artwork on postcards that can bring a little bit of home to those who might not be able to travel or see loved ones this Christmas.”
The Mayor concluded, “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank principals, teachers, SNA’s and all those who work to keep our children safe, and our schools open. As a community, we owe them a debt of gratitude.”
Details of the competition will be distributed directly to primary schools. Completed entries should be submitted by no later than 5 pm on Friday, November 20th.
The competition to design the postcards is open to all 4th class students in County Cork and should be submitted online via www.YourCouncil.ie
