The East Tip Haulbowline Island Remediation Project completed by Cork County Council, RPS Consulting Engineers, PJ Hegarty & Sons and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has been shortlisted for the Engineering Project of the Year 2019.
The remediation project on the East tip of Haulbowline Island saw the transformation of this waste area with its negative industrial legacy into a public recreational amenity which promises to greatly benefit locals and visitors alike.
Plans are currently being progressed to open the park once a lease has been finalised. This will enable Cork County Council to operate the area as a public recreation amenity.
Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey commented “The challenges presented by the East Tip site, including the location and nature of the site and the nature of the waste material, were quite unique and demanded innovative engineering solutions. The successful delivery of this landmark project for Cork County Council – which has transformed Cork Harbour, and came in under budget – is a great achievement of civil and environmental engineering. It’s great to see this recognised by Engineers Ireland.”
