Cork County Council has invited tenders for the prequalification of suitable contractors for the construction of the Carrigaline Western Relief Road. Suitable contractors will be shortlisted for invitation to tender for the main works contract before the end of the year, subject to funding confirmation. It is expected that a contractor will be appointed in early 2020 with works starting on the ground in April. The works are expected to take 18 months.
The Relief Road will alleviate traffic congestion in Main Street, Carrigaline, as well as providing the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the ongoing development of the town centre, including public realm improvements in Main Street.
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O’Sullivan noted: “The progression of the Carrigaline Western Relief Road project will make a huge difference for the residents and businesses of Carrigaline and its surrounding towns. This project will go hand in hand with other developments that will cement Carrigaline as a great place to live.”
Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey echoed the Mayor’s sentiments, noting “Progressing this project to tender stage is a welcome development for Carrigaline. Carrigaline is the largest town in Cork County. These works will ensure that Carrigaline can continue to meet the needs of its residents as well as supporting the development of the wider Cork community.”
The Relief Road is 25% funded by Cork County Council and 75% funded by the Urban Regeneration & Development Fund, which is allocated by the Department of Housing, Planning & Local Government.
