The Green Party in Cork has welcomed the starting of works to clean up an illegal dump at Ellis’s Yard in Ballyvolane.
However, the party warned that Cork City Council must make a decision on the long-term use for the site otherwise illegal dumping will resume, if it is left vacant.
Congratulating local campaigners, the party’s candidate in the Cork City North East ward, Oliver Moran, said:
“It’s a lesson in our lucky we are to have people with the skill and dedication of Noreen and others, including some people in the Cork media who would not let go of this issue.”
“What Cork City Council need to do now is agree on a long-term use for the site. Leaving it vacant, even with improved fencing and cameras will not solve the problem. The problem is that it is lying idle.”
“The site is designated for Traveller accommodation and the Spring Lane site next door is in a condition that Cork City Council should be ashamed of. There is a housing crisis across Cork. Leaving any site designated for housing vacant is deplorable. But whatever the decision, a decision on the site has to be made. Otherwise we’ll just be back here again in another short time.”
