The newly established Blueway in Millstreet will serve as a fantastic amenity for the local community and benefit the area’s tourism potential, according to North Cork Fine Gael Councillor John Paul O’Shea. €100,000 in funding was allocated for the Blueway project in Millstreet through the 2017 Town and Village Renewal Scheme. Millstreet was one of 15 towns around County Cork to benefit from this investment.
Cllr. O’Shea said: “I paid a visit to the Blueway in Millstreet recently and it was very pleasing to see how well the project has turned out. I said at the time of the funding allocations that the Blueway project would be a positive boost to the Millstreet and wider North Cork economy, and I am confident that this will be the case. My compliments to everyone in Millstreet who worked so hard to deliver this excellent project.
“The walkway from the pedestrian bridge to the river looks great and will be of huge benefit to people. The new car park and recreation area, as well as the footpath upgrades from the town to the Blueway along the Station Road all add to the project. I am sure that this facility will be utilised from both the local community as well as the many tourists we welcome each year to North Cork,” Cllr. O’Shea said.
A total of €1.3 million was allocated to County Cork under 2017 Town and Village Renewal Scheme. Along with Millstreet, other towns to benefit from the Scheme included Buttevant (€100,000 for the development of a Medieval Heritage Trail & River Walk), Fermoy (€100,000 for the creation of its own Blueway), and Macroom (€100,000 for a revamp of Middle Square).
