At a convention held in the party’s office on Bandon Road on this evening, Labour selected 27-year-old Luke Field as their candidate for Cork City’s South Central ward in next May’s local elections.
Mr Field has served the party as a local area representative since 2016, and was the Deputy Chair and Canvassing Officer of Together for Yes in Cork during the recent referendum on the Eighth Amendment.
Speaking at the convention, Mr Field said: ‘Cork City has been without a Labour councillor for almost 5 years now, and has suffered for it.
‘As a direct consequence, we have seen a less vocal council, a decline in the quality of local representation for the people of Cork City, and increasing encroachment from both the government and the local executive.
‘Labour councillors have always served Cork with distinction, not least those elected from this ward. By electing the Labour team next May, we can ensure that public service is reinstated.’
Mr Field is the third Labour candidate selected for a Cork ward in next year’s elections, along with Peter Horgan (South East) and John Maher (North East).
