Fianna Fáil’s Cllr. Padraig O’Sullivan has said that the €20,000 youth club funding announced this week for East Cork is a lifeline for the organisations that benefit and is calling for a stronger commitment to supporting young people from local and national government.
Cllr. O’Sullivan was commenting after Cork Education and Training Board announced total funding of €172,850 to support organisations such as scout groups, brass bands and youth cafes.

“These organisations are on the front line in terms of providing invaluable supports and activities to our younger people.
“As a secondary school teacher and local representative, I am conscious of the critical need to improve the social and recreational opportunities. I know that this funding will be of help to many groups.
“On average, the groups in East Cork will receive funding of €1,000 to help cover costs associated with transport, training, insurance and equipment. From youth cafes to scout groups, the funding supports a diverse range of services and supports for communities and young people.
“Additionally I want to remind youth groups across the Cork East that they have just one week left to submit a funding application for capital plans. The deadline is fast approaching – 28th June. I’m always ready and willing to work with sports and youth groups to help with applications, so please do get in touch.
“While the support from the ETB is very welcome, more needs to be done by local and national government. Too many young people go from week to week with little to no access to recreational or social activities.
“Supporting young people to engage in sport, recreation, art, culture, and activities that help them build better relationships with their friends is crucial in terms of building well-adjusted citizens.
“Crucially any activities that get young people talking to each other away from smartphones need to be supported and funded. It’s a major priority for me as I start to roll out my campaign for a Dáil seat, and it’s something I hope to progress if elected,” concluded O’Sullivan.
