Two Cork artists, Sam Perkin and Doireann O’Malley are just two of exceptional promise who have been given Next Generation awards by the Arts Council, the government agency for funding and developing the arts. The Next Generation programme recognises and promotes a selection of artists from different disciplines and gives them the time they need to develop their practice.
Awarded with €15,000 each, the innovative young artists work across music, literature, circus, theatre and architecture, and are based in all four provinces of Ireland. In Spring 2018, the 24 chosen artists will take part in a collective week-long residential programme at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Annaghmakerrig, Co Monaghan.
Arts Council Director Orlaith McBride said:
“Each year we have the difficult job of choosing from the dozens of excellent applications we receive, and in 2017 our task was harder than ever. We chose to support 24 artists of great potential from a diverse range of practices and disciplines, and I look forward to seeing their work for many years to come. I wish each of our recipients every success,” she added.
Sam Perkin has composed for leading orchestras, ensembles and soloists such as The Irish Chamber Orchestra, The Fidelio Trio and Miranda Cuckson. The extent to which Sam likes to explore the boundless possibilities of music can be seen in his recent compositions for Orchestra with Whale Sounds, Orchestra with Sign Language, and Strings with Body Percussion. He is a graduate of both Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon in France, where he won the prestigious Prix Salabert for Composition, and CIT Cork School of Music in Ireland.
Doireann O’Malley was born in Limerick and lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Currently working on a body of films which explore gender and its manifestations in a post speculative mind/body architectural project called Interbau Project.
