Holding out for a hero: Become a Mercy Hero on Friday, October 13th and help patients at The Mercy University Hospital
On Friday, October 13th, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to join companies, schools, and individuals from all over Cork and become Mercy Heroes in aid of The Mercy Hospital Foundation, and raise funds to purchase vital new profiling beds for critically ill patients at The Mercy University Hospital.
Oncology nurse, Una Dineen, St Therese’s Ward, Mercy University Hospital was joined by Firefighters John Malone, Ger Dreivers, John Casey and John Heffernan to launch the Mercy Hospital Foundation’s ‘Mercy Heroes’ campaign.

The Mercy Hospital Foundation is inviting people of all ages and from all walks of life to join in the fun on October 13th; so whether you’re planning a Dress Up/ Dress Down Day at work or school, a coffee morning at home or at your local club or can help out with Mercy street collections around the county, there’s a way to get involved. To host your own Mercy Heroes event or fundraiser, simply register at www.mercyfundraising.ie and you will receive a free Mercy Heroes Pack full of information and ideas.
Talking about the difference that the new profiling beds, which cost €1,500 each, will make, Karen Fitzgerald, Stroke Nurse at The Mercy said “Profiling beds will make a real difference for patients here at The Mercy, and the first to receive them will be those in Observation Beds. These are patients who require additional monitoring and nursing care post-surgery or who are acutely medically unwell.
“The new beds will ensure that we can make their stay as comfortable and easy as possible for them in what can be a distressing time. Unlike standard beds, the bases of these electric profiling beds are sectioned so the mattress can be profiled to achieve various positions, the height can also be adjusted, and patients are also able to reposition themselves more independently which is beneficial for them and helps with a quicker recovery.”

Anybody can be a Hero, and we want to celebrate our Mercy Heroes and so we are encouraging you to join us on Friday, October 13th. Let’s all be heroes and together, save lives.”
