Lord Mayor, Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald recently meet with the Cork Drag Hunt Committee as they announced the time and venue for the National Drag Hunt Competition.
Drag hunting, is a form of equestrian sport, where mounted riders hunt the trail of an artificially laid scent with hounds.
The National Drag Hunt Competition is one the main events of the sports season where dogs from all around Ireland vie for the coveted award.
The Lord Mayor remembered how during his youth, drag hunting was an important recreational pursuit for the people of the northside and it was important that these old traditions be maintained in this modern electronic world. The Lord Mayor also welcomed the support of Gurranabraher Credit Union as long-term sponsors of this event and pointed out the importance of Credit Unions in keeping community traditions alive both in the city and country.
Chairman of Gurranabraher Credit Union, Michael O’Connell said at the recent announcement “Credit Unions around Ireland, and particularly in Cork have always and continue to support important community initiatives. I am delighted that our Credit Union is at the forefront of support to our community after contributing in excess of €150,000 over the past 3 years to local organisations.
Mr O’Connell also believes that “Sponsorship like this, demonstrates how important a strong, secure and profitable Credit Union is to the local area. We are part of the DNA of the local community and providing sponsorship to help keep the old traditions alive is incumbent upon us as a responsible, local financial institution.
The National Drag Hunt Competition will place in Castletownroche on Sunday 24th September.
