The Head of Student Affairs at the Cork Institute of Technology, Dr Dan Collins, has congratulated and offered his best wishes and that of his colleagues at CIT to all students who today receive the results of the 2017 Leaving Certificate Examination.
Dr Collins indicated that while ‘this is a very important milestone on a student’s educational journey…this is also the beginning of a new chapter on life’s journey’ for each student. Dr Collins indicated that there are currently a ‘myriad of progression opportunities available – including, though not exclusively, Higher and Further Education, Apprenticeship prospects in traditional and ever increasing new areas, Gap Years, work…to name a few’.
Dr Collins noted that 2017 is also a mile stone for the Leaving Certificate as a new Common Points Scale and grading system are introduced. ‘This will see fewer broader grades introduced replacing the former grading system which has been in place since 1992’. He advised students to check, online, with the CAO (www.cao.ie) and Qualifax (www.qualifax.ie) who have online point calculators available to ascertain points.
He indicated that students, whatever their results, should celebrate what they have achieved as well as address the options now open to them with their Guidance Counsellors and other significant people in their lives. ‘While today is a momentous occasion for so many, it is also the start of new opportunities for many’ concluded Dr Collins.
